The safety belt is your best shield. Find out why it's vital to buckle up when using agricultural machinery. The MSA can help you work safely.

For the protection structure to be fully effective, the driver must be strapped in.

One of the major risks when using agricultural machinery in the fields is that it may overturn or roll over. Machines must be fitted with a roll-over protection structure, a rigid cab or a roll bar, to prevent the driver from being crushed.

this equipment is insufficient if the driver is not strapped in. The seatbelt keeps the driver in the cabin and in the survival zone. Without a seatbelt, the driver runs the risk of colliding violently with parts of the driver's compartment, or of being ejected and crushed by the tractor.

The best protection is therefore a combination of a rollover protection structure and a seatbelt.

seatbelts reduce the risk of serious accidents

On the road, it is compulsory to wear a seatbelt on agricultural machinery if it is fitted.

The severity of accidents involving agricultural machinery is often linked to the failure to wear a seatbelt. In France between 2013 and 2017 (source: Observatoire National Interministériel de la Sécurité Routière (ONISR)), 984 road accidents involved an agricultural tractor. More than a third of the serious victims of these accidents, who died or were hospitalised, had not been wearing a seatbelt.

It's been proven that seatbelts protect you in the event of an impact! A crash test carried out in September 2020 by Utac (Union technique de l'automobile, du motocycle et du cycle), in partnership with Entraid and the MSA, shows that a head-on collision at 30 km/h can be fatal for an unbelted driver. Without a seatbelt, the driver is violently thrown onto the steering column, which digs into the thorax and stomach.

The MSA advises you

If your tractor is old and not fitted with a belt, you can take action.

The first solution is to use the anchorage points on the movable part of the driver's seat, or on the chassis or another fixed part of the tractor when the seat is not movable. This solution applies to vehicles put into service since July 2009.

It is also possible to replace the seat without anchorage points with an equipped model of the same dimensions, so that it fits into the protective structure.

The Occupational Health and Safety departments of the MSAs can help you make tractors that are not fitted with a seatbelt safer by studying the best technical solution or by looking for preventive solutions tailored to your business to improve working conditions and prevent risks.

Prevention of agricultural road risk
Although accidents involving tractors represent a small proportion of road incidents, their consequences are often more serious. At harvest time, the number of vehicles on the road increases, and so do the risks.
